Plan Your Visit to the Marine Discovery Center

The beauty that surrounds us in Florida is largely dependent upon our precious coastal ecosystem; and the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach has always been held in high regard for the protection it provides to our aquatic environs and so much more…

The Marine Discovery Center is located at the 22-acre site of the old New Smyrna Beach High School and surrounded by the Indian River Lagoon. Prior to the school’s construction, this area was a natural salt marsh. A staunch advocate of research, education and stewardship, the Marine Discovery Center was responsible for properly restoring the marsh’s elevation and lagoon’s water level at this site, as well as planting indigenous coastal aquatic plant species.

The Marine Discovery Center has spent the last 20 years improving water quality, promoting healthy habitats and informing guests about the amazing biodiversity of the Indian River Lagoon – which is home to over 4,000 species and spans 156 miles of Florida’s east coast. The vast array of delightful and informative Marine Discovery programs for all ages include exhibit tanks, live shoreline demonstrations, kayak eco-tours, classes, camps and lectures with certified naturalists. Grant funding has also made a butterfly garden, nature play area and 29-foot observatory possible.

Future plans for the Marine Discovery Center include an amphitheater. Of course, the Marine Discovery Center is also fiercely dedicated to continually protecting and restoring our lagoon to preserve it for us and for future generations.

If you’re staying at Ebb Tide condos, the Marine Discovery Center is located conveniently nearby and is an excellent way to spend the day!
